World Surf League comes to Cabarete, Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic will host a stop on the World Surf League (WSL) tour for the first time since the tour’s establishment. Expected to participate are 96 athletes from various countries, along with 15 locals from the Dominican Republic.
Top surfers in the North American region of the WSL Qualifying Series (QS) will compete in Playa Encuentro, Cabarete, Puerto Plata from March 3 to 6, 2022.
The tournament has been a highly anticipated event in the country as the surf culture is rapidly growing. International, professional surfers will compete alongside local surfers for the chance to be crowned Cabarete Pro champion.
Event producers from Carambola Surf House stated that their passion is to grow the sport of surfing at the local level and attract additional tourism to the country, which already enjoys a huge tourist market. After two years of a pandemic, people are traveling once again and the Dominican Republic is a welcoming destination for water sports enthusiasts and beach lovers.
Fans of Playa Encuentro are happy to surf alongside the top talented athletes that will visit from other countries, and compare the quality of waves to the best of Indonesia, Hawaii, and Australia.
The event is open for spectators to come and enjoy the competition, local vendor market, and festive scene.
