Fashion and Culture in the Dominican Republic

April 28, 2015

Santo Dominigo, Dominican Republic joins the exclusive list of cities chosen to host the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, which will take place April 27-30, 2015.  Designers of national and international fame will showcase their collections for the public’s delight and enjoyment. New York, Sidney, Berlin, Madrid and Stockhom are just a few of the cities that host this glamorous event around the world.

The Dominican Republic, which is still mourning the loss of its beloved fashion icon and designer Oscar de la Renta, will host the show annually. With the “Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Santo Domingo”, the country continues to stay current with the latest trends and styles, and proves to the world that Mr. de la Renta left a great legacy in the up-and-coming designers, some of which were even mentored by him.

To further celebrate all that is fashionable in the Dominican Republic, two events on the North Coast will take place in Cabarete-Sosua in the spring and summer of 2015.

Jazz for PeaceJazz por la Paz” will be held on April 30th at The Beach Club at Sea Horse Ranch in Cabarete to celebrate International Jazz Day to raise funds for the music foundation Fedujazz. The event will include a fashion show curated by internationally-recognized Dominican designer Geannina Azar, with a jazz concert by the talented Rafaelito Mirabal and “Systema Temperado”.  An auction of a piece by the outstanding visual artist Adolfo Faringthon will also be held. Fedujazz is affiliated with the Dominican Republic Jazz Festival, and provides continuous music programs year-round for local children living in poverty.

On June 6, “Sosua Sol & Arena” a fashion show-artisanal bazaar curated by renowned Dominican 11168893_972505792768308_3198452735045952202_ndesigner Sissy Bermúdez will be held at 6pm at Playa Alicia, Sosúa, organized by the Association for Sustainable Development of Sosúa (ADSS). In preparation for this event, Sissy has provided a series of creative design workshops for a group of artisans from Sosúa and Cabarete, and their creations will be available at the event. Part of the funds raised will be allotted to the Sosúa Hospital.

These events, among others, showcase why the Dominican Republic is truly the fashion capitol of the Caribbean. Get inspired by this island nation’s colorful, natural vibe and support important local causes along the way.
